This is the final email message that was sent to all of the Los Altos Robotics competition team members and families.

FLL Los Altos Robotics Local Competition Participants and Spectators,

I am looking forward to a great event. Thank you for your part in it.

We will open the doors for the teams and volunteers to set up for the competition at 12:30 PM. We will have five competition rounds at the Los Altos Local Competition on November 19 starting at 1:15 PM. Teams will compete in three of the first four rounds and be judged in the other round. All of the teams will compete in the fifth round. After the five rounds, we will select the best performing and most outstanding robots and have the teams come to the main playing field and demonstrate their robots. They will use the microphone to tell the entire audience how their robot performs the missions and then show us how it works. The Showcase and Demonstration round will not count towards the scoring in any award category. The purpose of the Showcase and Demonstration Round is to show all of us the team's cleverness and ingenuity. So team members, please think about how you might present your robots. For the presentations, I think it would be great if one or two team members go through a mission and then hand off the microphone to the team members responsible for the next mission. This part of the event is a lot of fun and very interesting.

Location: The Los Altos Robotics FLL competitions will take place at the same locations as the scrimmages. For those that did not make it to a scrimmage, they were held in the Multi Purpose rooms at Covington Elementary School which is located at 205 Covington Road, Los Altos, CA 94024 and at Oak Avenue Elementary School which is located at 1501 Oak Avenue, Los Altos, CA 94024. The Multi Purpose rooms face the parking lots at both schools and are easy to locate once you are at the schools. What to bring:

Extension cords (long and short) and a plug strip. Please avoid overloading the plugs and creating trip hazards.
Your robot(s). While you can bring more than one robot to the competition, only one set of allowable parts (RCX, 3 motors, two touch sensors, two light sensors, etc.) can be brought to the table for each match.
Your robot kit(s) and computer so that your team can repair or improve the robot while they are there.
Recommended, a snack for eating outside and water to drink.
Please label everything you bring. It helps us return it to you if it is found.

Referee Score Sheet: The attached Referee Score Sheets will again be used. As soon as your round ends, the Referee will write down the missions that you have scored points for on the Referee Score Sheet. The team will then be asked to review the scoring before the table is reset and the score sheet is taken up to the score keeper. Our goal is to have perfect scoring of all rounds. This review will be your only chance to change the score and it is very important that the teams help the Referees record the correct scoring. So please print out the Referee Score Sheet and have your team members become familiar with it so they can quickly and accurately go through it at the Scrimmage and Local Competition.

Also, please let us know if you have any corrections to the team list. While many materials have been printed already, we want to be sure and use the correct name at the tournament for announcements and awards.

Volunteers: We need lots of help for the tournament. Fortunately, we have most of the positions covered. However, we might make a call for more help at the start of the event and if so, please consider helping out.

Food: No food or drinks (except water) inside the multi purpose room. It is a good idea to have the team members bring a snack to help them get through the busy afternoon. Please eat it outside though.

Event Schedule:

Saturday November 19 at Oak Avenue and Covington Elementary Schools - Local Competition: Each of these locations is where 11 and 12 teams will compete against each other and certificates will be given for the many different categories. Judges will be observing and speaking to each team during the tournament. Descriptions of the judging categories are in the FLL Team Manual and on the FLL website. Some of the participating teams will qualify to participate in the Northern California State competition and the rest of the teams will be finished with competing in the 2005 FLL season. Here is a tentative schedule for the Oak School Tournament. The Covington School Tournament will be similar.

Tuesday November 29 at St. Tim's Church - Los Altos FLL Board of Director’s Meeting: All are welcome to join us. We will be discussing the 2005 Los Altos FLL season, planning for the 2006 season, and covering organization topics for the Los Altos FLL Board of Directors. Sunday January 14 at San Jose City College in San Jose - The Northern California FLL State Tournament: 64 teams out of several hundred in the Bay Area will participate in the No. CA FLL State Tournament. The event will run all day. All are welcome to attend as spectators. There is no fee for spectators to attend. Information for the event is at http://www.playingatlearning.org/NCaFLL/2005/index.html. San Jose City College is located at 2100 Moorpark Avenue, San Jose, CA 95128. This tournament is made possible because of the efforts of a small group of very dedicated volunteers headed up by Mark and Jill Edelman. The expenses for this event are only partially funded by the team registration fees and the rest is funded by contributions. Please help Mark and Jill out by contributing to their 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation by following the directions in the "Donating to Support NCaFLL" section near the bottom of the NCaFLL (Northern California FIRST LEGO League) page.

If you have any award nominations for Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Coach/Mentor and Outstanding Young Mentor. Please send them to Dave Lordemann at Lordemannd@aol.com by Wednesday November 16, 2005. Giving these awards is one way to encourage higher level of volunteerism and mentoring, specially from our younger generation.

Advancement to State: Eight of the best teams at the Los Altos Robotics Local Competitions will advance to the State Competition. For each of the two tournaments, the Director's Award winner will earn a slot, the second place team in the Director's Award category will earn a slot, and the remaining slots will go to teams with the highest average score from their three best scores in the four competition rounds. We expect that four slots will be awarded for each tournament; however, if for some reason the Head Judges from the two tournaments see a compelling reason to do so, one of the state slots will be moved from one tournament to the other. The Director's Award will be given based on a combination of scoring by the judges and scores in the field competition. In the event of a tie the Head Judge will prevail.
